I wanted to take a moment to address a topic that has been on my mind lately—the term “PQS” or Professional Quantity Surveyor. While it’s important to acknowledge that there are exceptional individuals who rightfully earn this title, I can’t help but express my discomfort with the implied notion that other Quantity Surveyors are somehow less professional. In reality, this couldn’t be further from the truth, except in a few exceptional cases.
As professionals in the field of Quantity Surveying, we all strive to uphold the highest standards of expertise, integrity, and dedication. Our commitment to delivering accurate cost estimates, managing budgets, and ensuring the successful execution of construction projects is a testament to our professionalism and expertise. The culmination of years of education, experience, and continuous learning moulds us into skilled practitioners in our own right.
Rather than creating divisions or hierarchies within our profession, we should celebrate the diversity and depth of skills present across the Quantity Surveying community.
Each individual brings unique strengths, perspectives, and areas of specialisation to the table, enriching the collective knowledge and driving innovation within our field.
The term “PQS” may have initially emerged as a means to highlight individuals who have attained specific qualifications or memberships, but it inadvertently undermines the contributions and professionalism of countless other Quantity Surveyors. By perpetuating this distinction, we risk undervaluing the expertise and dedication of those who may not carry the “PQS” label but have contributed significantly to the profession.
Instead, let’s shift our focus to acknowledging the incredible talent and accomplishments of all Quantity Surveyors, regardless of their formal titles or designations. Let’s foster a culture of inclusivity, collaboration, and mutual respect within our industry, recognising that our collective success depends on the collective excellence of our community.
I invite you to join me in embracing a more inclusive mindset that appreciates the vast array of skills and experiences that our fellow Quantity Surveyors bring to the table. Together, we can break down barriers, promote professional growth, and collectively elevate the stature of our industry.
