As a Quantity Surveyor, I believe that delivering bad news about a project’s feasibility doesn’t have to be the end of the road. In fact, it’s an opportunity to work with clients to find solutions and overcome challenges.
While it’s true that engaging a QS from the start can help avoid issues down the line, I also work with clients to bring their projects back to life after they’ve been deemed unfeasible. My goal is to find solutions that work for everyone involved, including contractors, and move the project forward successfully.
One approach I use is value engineering, which helps optimise project costs without sacrificing outcomes. For example, I recently helped Dan Taylor of Taylor Capital increase the units on his PBSA project from 120m to 150 and reduce costs by £1.6m through a series of five cost plans and design reiterations.
If you’re embarking on a development project, I recommend engaging a QS early on to ensure its feasibility and avoid surprises. Together, we can find solutions and make your vision a reality.
